Beautiful, free-flowing, and bold painting

This 5-inch makai ware evokes the warmth of the tropics.  The bright red bougainvillea flowers create a truly gorgeous atmosphere. While yachimun pottery tends to have a heavy, substantial image, Toushingama's pottery is characterized by its neither too heavy nor too thick. The height and raised rim are exquisitely designed, making it feel natural in your hand. Perhaps this is the result of a history of crafting everyday tableware that is intimately connected to its users.

Bring Okinawa to your dining table

"Makai" means bowl in Okinawan. Serve freshly cooked rice and top with fragrantly grilled cod roe. Steam rises from the round bowl, and the aroma is so delicious! It's sure to whet your appetite. These cups are also perfect for dessert, holding ice cream or shiratama dumplings. They're also great for enjoying a cold zenzai (sweet red bean soup) snack to fully immerse yourself in the Okinawan atmosphere. They come in a variety of colors and shapes, so you can enjoy coordinating them with your table setting.

Things to Know Before Purchasing

Yachimun, Okinawan pottery, exudes a warmth that evokes the generous climate of Okinawa. Yachimun pottery often exhibits uneven glaze application, cracks called crazing, accumulations of glaze from multiple coats, irregularities, and pinholes. These are also part of the unique character of handmade pottery, giving it a unique texture not found in mass-produced items. We hope you enjoy them. [Individual Differences] Because each piece is handmade, there will be individual differences in shape, size, thickness, etc. [Painting/Firing Unevenness] Since each piece is hand-painted and handmade, there may be slight variations in the strength and thickness of the lines, the pattern, and other aspects, even within the same product. During firing, temperatures vary depending on the location of the kiln, resulting in uneven firing. [Other Notes]

〇Glaze unevenness and pinholes may be present, as seen in the photo. *Products that have passed inspection by the pottery manufacturer or artist are inspected again before being delivered to customers.

After training at Ikutoen in Tsuboya, Masakazu Soma established the kiln in Nakama, Onna Village, Okinawa Prefecture, as its owner in 1975.
In 1978, the kiln moved to Zakimi, Yomitan Village. It continues to operate to this day.
While preserving the traditional techniques of Tsuboya ware, the company continues to create new works, such as unique red-glazed designs, blue-and-white designs, fish patterns, and ichin designs, under the motto of "always creating something new."
