Collection: Tanba ware
What is Tamba Ware?
Tamba ware, also known as Tanba-yaki, is a traditional type of Japanese pottery produced in Sasayama, Hyogo Prefecture, with a history that spans approximately 800 years. It is recognized as one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns, known for its rustic and robust designs. Tamba ware includes a wide range of products, from everyday tableware to tea ceremony utensils.
Characteristics of Tamba Ware
1. Natural Glaze (Shizen-yu): The hallmark of Tamba ware is its natural glaze, which forms during the firing process in wood-fired kilns. Ash from the wood settles on the pottery and melts at high temperatures to create a natural, unique glaze. This natural glaze results in distinctive finishes, with no two pieces looking exactly alike, embodying a one-of-a-kind beauty.
2. Texture of the Clay (Tsuchi no Shitsukan): Tamba ware is made from local clay, giving it a distinctive, earthy texture. The weight and warmth of the clay can be felt when handling the pottery, making it an endearing and cherished item with continued use.
3. Unique Techniques such as Ittchin (Slip Trailing): Tamba ware features unique techniques like Ittchin, where slip (liquid clay) is applied using a tube to create raised designs on the pottery. This method allows for simple yet distinctive and individualistic designs, adding character to each piece.
Differences from Other Regions
Tamba ware's rustic and robust design sets it apart from pottery from other regions. For instance, while Arita ware and Kutani ware are known for their intricate and colorful decorations, Tamba ware is characterized by its simplicity and natural beauty. Compared to Mino ware or Shigaraki ware, Tamba ware's use of natural glaze and local clay texture are unique, providing a distinct look and feel.
Appeal of Tamba Ware
The charm of Tamba ware lies in its rustic, robust designs and the unique effects of its natural glaze. Each piece is meticulously crafted by skilled artisans, ensuring high quality and a warm, appealing design. Tamba ware is versatile enough to be used for both everyday dining and special occasions, making it a beloved choice for many.
