Ontayaki

It is said that about 300 years ago, the kiln was opened as a separate kiln from Koishiwara ware in Toho Village, Fukuoka Prefecture. Like Koishiwara ware, its most distinctive feature is its unique geometric patterns such as ``hake-me'', ``tobikanna'', and ``comb-painted(kushime)''. It is popular for its orderly yet simple texture that gives you the warmth of handiwork, and has been used as a pottery for everyday use. Since the opening of the kiln, the tradition and techniques have been passed down from parent to child, adhering to the principle of inheritance from one child to the next. Currently, there are 10 potteries, and their pottery techniques have been designated as an important intangible cultural property of the country. It became widely known after Soetsu Yanagi, the leader of the folk art movement, praised it as "the best folk pottery in the world."
